How to create public categories.

Description: The key to successfully using Now Up-to-Date & Contact is Categories. You can have and use an infinite number of categories, both private (just for you) and public (for sharing - but based on who you want to have access). Public categories are shared with your other users.

Preparation:  You'll need to set up an event and contact server and login to the servers. See the user manual for details.

Creating and Modifying Public Categories:

  1. From the Define menu on the Now Up-to-Date & Contact menu, choose Categories.

The Define Categories dialog box appears.

Note that Private appears in the Server Field.  This means any category you create will be a Private Category and will be stored locally in your Calendar File, unless you change the selection in the Server Field.

  2. Choose a Now Up-to-Date Server from the Server Field.

Below the Categories list in the center of the window you'll find a "+" to create categories and a "-" to delete them. Click the "+".

If there is a password set up on the public event server for creating a new category, you will need to enter the password to do that.

The Now Up-to-Date Server’s name appears in the Server Field, and the Categories stored on the Now Up-to-Date Server appear in the Server List below it.

  3. Click on New.

The New Public Category dialog box appears.

  4. Enter a name for the new Category in the Name Field.
  5. Enter a description for the new Category in the Purpose Field, just below the Name Field.
  6. Enter a password for protection, if desired.
  7. Click OK.

You will return to the Define Categories dialog box with the new Category now in the Server List.

  8. Click OK again.

You will return to the calendar display.  The new Public Category will be added to your current Set and you can now assign Events to it.

You can notify other users about the new public category. Remember, if you only want them to view the events or contacts in this category, give them the Read password. If you want them to be able to create, modify, or delete (careful!) contacts or events, give them the Edit password.
